About the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing 1:18
The 300SL was the fastest production car in the world when it appeared, the first with fuel injection, and the reason its doors open upward is that the tubular spaceframe underneath ran too high along the sills for a normal door. Every one of those facts is visible on this model. Lift a door and you see the deep sill you would have to climb over; lift the bonnet and the six-cylinder sits tilted 50 degrees to the left to fit under the low line.
The doors are the best part. They hinge at the roof on sprung pivots and hold themselves open, and the frames are thin enough that the car looks right with both up. The seats carry a printed tartan insert, the dashboard has the large ivory wheel and the row of chrome-rimmed gauges, and the bumpers, grille bar and the eyebrows over the wheel arches are separate chromed parts. Wheels are the steel type with body-colour rims and chrome hub caps.
This is the model we point to when someone asks what 1:18 can do for the money. It is about 25 cm long, sits low, and it is the one that gets picked up first in any collection.
