About the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Roadster 1:24
The 500K was the supercharged Mercedes of the mid-1930s, and its shape is defined by a bonnet that takes up half the car: a 5.0-litre straight-eight sits under it with a supercharger that engaged when you pushed the accelerator past a stop. The model keeps that proportion and the three chromed exhaust flexes that exit through the bonnet side, which are separate parts.
The bonnet opens in two halves from a centre hinge, the pre-war way. The doors open onto a two-seat cabin with the large steering wheel and the dashboard dials, and the hood is modelled folded behind the seats with the twin spare wheels in the rear deck. The wire wheels are spoked mouldings, and the headlamps, horns, bumpers and radiator shell are separate chromed parts.
It is the affordable way into pre-war cars; the 1:18 of the same car has more parts and twice the price. Handle it by the body, not the lamps or running boards.
Living with a 1:24 scale model
At 1:24 the model is around 19 cm long, compact enough for a desk and big enough for the doors to open and the dashboard to be readable. This is the scale to buy if you want a few cars rather than one, and the pull-back motor and lights make it the safest choice for a young enthusiast.
