About the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing 1:24
The 300SL's doors open upward because its spaceframe chassis ran too high along the sides for a normal door, and that single engineering fact made it the most recognisable car of the 1950s. The 1:24 keeps the gullwing action on proper roof hinges, and at this size the doors are light enough to stay open without any spring at all.
The bonnet lifts to show the straight-six tilted over to its left, which is how Mercedes fitted it under the low bonnet line. The cabin has the ivory steering wheel and the row of dials, the front wheels steer, and the chrome eyebrows over the wheel arches, the bumpers and the grille bar are separate plated parts. Paint on this batch is the classic silver.
This is the model we suggest when someone wants the Gullwing but not the 1:18 price, and it is one of the few classic cars here small enough for a desk.
Living with a 1:24 scale model
At 1:24 the model is around 19 cm long, compact enough for a desk and big enough for the doors to open and the dashboard to be readable. This is the scale to buy if you want a few cars rather than one, and the pull-back motor and lights make it the safest choice for a young enthusiast.
