About the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Special Roadster 1:18 Model
The 500K Special Roadster was the most expensive Mercedes of the 1930s and fewer than thirty were built, most for film stars and royalty. It is all bonnet: a 5.0-litre supercharged straight-eight sits under a hood so long that the exhausts exit through the side of it in three chromed flexible pipes, and the model reproduces those pipes as separate chromed parts running down into the front wing.
The bonnet opens in two halves from the centre hinge, pre-war style, and the doors open onto a two-seat cabin with the large four-spoke wheel and the row of dials. The hood is modelled folded behind the seats, the spare wheels sit in the rear deck, and the running boards, headlamps, horns and bumpers are all separate chromed pieces. The wire wheels are individually spoked and the front pair steer. Paint is a cream with a dark red interior.
It has more parts than anything modern in the catalogue and it needs a careful owner. Lift by the roof line or the chassis, never the wings or the lamps.
Living with a 1:18 scale model
At 1:18 this is a large model, roughly a ruler's length, and it is built as a display piece rather than a toy. Expect metal body panels with proper hinges, a carpeted or textured floor inside, and a finished engine bay under the bonnet. Give it about 30 cm of shelf width and lift it by the roof or chassis, not the bumpers.
